Ray Stevens, 70, is an American country music
, pop singer-songwriter who has become known for his novelty songs as well as more serious works.
Stevens has won two Grammy Awards: one for “Everything Is Beautiful” and one for the arrangement of his country and western version of the jazz standard “Misty” (1975). Stevens was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1980.
On 11th December 2009, Stevens issued the single “We The People”. The song is about the controversial health care bill that was then being debated in Congress. The song asks members of Congress not to pass health care, dubbed Obama Care, because not only voting in favor of the bill will likely mean political suicide during the next round of elections in 2010 but most national polls suggest that the country doesn’t want a massive health care over-haul but instead prefers improvements on the current system. Because the health care bill is controversial, Stevens’ song is just as controversial with those who support President Barack Obama and his policies.
By 1st January 2010, the music video for “We the People” had been viewed more than one million times during its first two weeks on the video hosting web-site You Tube. Originally available only as a digital download, a physical copy of the single became available soon after.
